Wanglaoji Herbal Tea Museum is located in Songqiao Palace, which is the first semi-open Chinese medicine museum in the Shennong Caotang Park of the Hungarian Hutchison Whampoa Chinese Medicine Co., Ltd. It is the world's largest herbal tea museum with the greatest number of collection and the highest technology content.
The museum was funded by Wanglaoji Great Health Industry Company Limited, which is a listed company of Guangzhou Pharmaceutical Corporation and a wholly-owned subsidiary of Baiyun Mountain (600332). It was started in May 2012. After repeated demonstrations of design changes, it took one and a half years to finally unveil the "mystery". The museum is a brick-and-mortar tile that faces south, which a typical Lingnan traditional style building. There are three houses and two courtyards, being filled with ancient and famous trees. The two courtyards are connected by a gallery, and the overall layout is symmetrical, virtual and real, spacious and elegant. The craft decoration is exquisitely crafted and has a strong Lingnan charm everywhere.
It is reported that Wang Laoji, coming from Heshan, Guangdong province, created Wanglaoji herbal tea in the Thirteen-Trades Monopoly of Guangzhou during the 8th year (1828) of Qing Daoguang period, which was known as "the first ancestor of herbal tea." For more than 100 years, Wanglaoji has always been connected with the national movement, and synchronized with the times, and it has developed into the first brand in China with the value of 100 billion from a herbal tea shop. In order to express the eternal commemoration of the first ancestor of herbal tea, the museum set up a bronze statue for the founder "Wang Laoji". The bronze statue is a standing statue, with the teapot on his left hand and the medicine herbs on his right hands, looking kindness, warm and lifelike. The bronze statue fully demonstrates the great feelings of Wanglaoji’s healing hearts, which is awe-inspiring.
Deng Tietao, a 97-year-old Chinese medicine giant, wrote the name for the museum and sent a congratulatory letter. He expressed his belief that the completion of the Wanglaoji Herbal Tea Museum will surely inherit and promote the Chinese herbal tea culture. He sent a congratulatory message, saying that "Wanglaoji can not only be said to be Chinese Coca-Cola, but will surpass Coca-Cola in the future!", meanwhile Deng also gave specially a badge to the Wanglaoji Herbal Tea Museum at the opening ceremony.
On behalf of the association, Zhang Junxiu (President of the Guangdong Food Industry Association) appeared in person on the site, who read the congratulatory letter from the association, saying that the Wanglaoji Herbal Tea Museum will deliver positive energy for the healthy development of the herbal tea industry and establish a good display and dissemination platform for herbal tea. It will become a tourist attraction for the world's herbal tea culture.
Most Abundant, with the World of Giant Copper Gourd
It is reported that the exhibition area is divided into six major themes such as traceability articles, rising articles, innovative articles, prosperous articles, principle articles, and outlook articles. By means of the old photos, objects and multimedia, it comprehensively introduced the ancient and modern development and health mechanism of Chinese herbal tea, as well as Wanglaoji’s legendary story and brilliant achievements, and these thousands of cultural relics are condensed into a Chinese herbal tea history.
On the museum square, there is a giant copper gourd being up to 2.9 meters, which is the so called biggest one in the world. According to historical records, Lin Zexu was dedicating himself to Guangdong to ban opium. One day, he was tired of running around and feeling evil and heatstroke. By a curious twist of fate, he was sickened the next day after taking Wanglaoji herbal tea. In order to express his thanks, he presented a large copper pot with a gourd shape and carved the three gold characters of "Wanglaoji", showing people in the world that the function of Wanglaoji is healing hearts. Nowadays, this large copper pot has been reworked to make visitors feast their eyes.
At the opening ceremony, another treasure of the museum - the “Please Tea” cylinder was also unveiled. According to the introduction of Huang Yiwen, who is the person in charge of the museum, the “Please Tea” cylinder was customized by the old shop Wanglaoji in Guangzhou during the late Qing Dynasty. It is a rare cultural relic of more than 150 years. Wang Laoji used it when he visited the soldiers in the Battle in Humen during the first Opium War. The cylinder has suffered the turmoil of late Qing Dynasty, the Republic of China war, the "Cultural Revolution" catastrophe. Fortunately, several generations of employees have been working hard to protect and collect it. In 2013, the Wanglaoji Herbal Tea Museum was started. Wanglaoji’s old workers donated this “please tea” cylinder, thus the century-old treasure reappeared in the world.
In addition, the museum reproduces the life scene of the old herbal tea shop by means of earthen stoves, firewood, and medicinal tea pots, etc. The audience can experience the process of making authentic herbal tea by hand in the high-tech interactive area. Besides, there are packaging, advertising contents of Wanglaoji herbal tea in different eras for 185 years being displayed at the museum, and the exhibition is full of contents with the connection of tradition and modernity, making people linger and forget to return.
Herbal tea is a treasure of Chinese health culture. There are 16 herbal tea brands represented by Wanglaoji being born in Lingnan during the first batch of national intangible cultural heritage. The Wanglaoji Museum carved a hundred years of glory in this land. It is reported that Wanglaoji will achieve sales of 15 billion Yuan this year, which is expected to complete the sales target of 20 billion Yuan in 2014.
